Why a Book is the Ultimate Swag: Business Publishing Guide
In a Sea of Swag, Be the Book
There's a familiar rhythm to a good business event: the name tags, the handshakes, the hum of people who are genuinely glad to be in the same room. Last night I felt that energy at a wonderful event hosted by the Orange County Iranian American Chamber of Commerce (OCIACC) at UC Irvine. And this time, the coffee came in the form of delicious espresso martinis, courtesy of Sam Madani of Bomani.
Being back on campus was a treat in itself. UC Irvine is where I went to college, and there's something special about returning to a place that shaped you, this time to sit in a room full of business leaders, authors, and entrepreneurs.
As we checked in, each of us was handed a swag bag. And tucked inside, alongside the thoughtful goodies from our hosts, was a book: Crossing the Desert by bestselling author Payam Zamani. Payam is the Founder and CEO of One Planet Group, Buyerlink, and Quite Remarkable, and he was one of the evening's speakers.
I watched it happen all around me. People reached into their bags, pulled out the book, turned it over, and started reading the back cover before they'd even found their seats. Conversations started with "Have you seen this?" It's a reaction I never get tired of seeing, because it confirms what I tell my clients every day: a book is unlike anything else you can put in someone's hands.
The Book Started the Conversation Before He Did
By the time Payam took the stage for his fireside chat, many of us already had his book in our laps. His conversation lasted about 25 minutes, and it was compelling. But here's what struck me: his book had been working for him from the moment the doors opened, and it will keep working long after the event ended.
Think about how many business cards you've collected that are now sitting in a drawer somewhere. A book doesn't meet that fate. It goes into the bag for the drive home, onto the nightstand, onto the shelf. It gets passed to a colleague who wasn't there. Twenty-five minutes on stage became hours of attention, spread over weeks and months.
A book also says something about the person who wrote it. It says, I've thought deeply about this, and I'm confident enough to put it in writing. In a world full of fleeting posts and quick videos, that kind of permanence builds credibility fast.
Why So Many Speakers Are Authors
It's no coincidence that several of last night's speakers had written books. Event organizers look for people with clear, proven expertise, and a book is one of the strongest signals there is. It opens doors to stages, panels, podcasts, and media, and once you're in the room, it gives people something to take home.
For coaches, consultants, and business owners, that's the real value. Your book lets potential clients get to know your thinking before they ever pick up the phone. By the time they reach out, they already trust you.
"But I'm Not a Writer"
This is the hesitation I hear most often, and it's a fair one. Running a business is more than a full-time job, and adding "write a book" to your list can feel impossible.
That's exactly why I built Trillium Sage. You bring the expertise, the stories, and the hard-won lessons. We bring the structure, the publishing know-how, and the support to turn it into a book you're proud to share.
Be the Book
Last night wasn't just a great evening of networking. It was a real-world reminder of something I believe deeply: when you share your expertise in a book, you give people something they want to keep.
My heartfelt thanks to OCIACC for bringing together such an inspiring group, to UC Irvine for hosting us, and to Payam Zamani for a gift that reminded a whole room why books still matter.
If you've ever wondered what it would look like to hand out your book at your next event, I'd love to talk about it. Schedule a free strategy session with me here.

Q: I don't have time to write a book. Can I still get one published?
A: Absolutely. Done-for-you publishing services, like those offered by Trillium Sage, handle the writing and production process for you. You provide the expertise through a series of interviews, and a professional team turns your ideas into a polished book.

Q: How does a book compare to other marketing materials like brochures or business cards?
A: Unlike disposable marketing materials, a book has a high perceived value and a long shelf life. It's a tangible piece of your expertise that people keep, display, and refer to, providing a much deeper and more lasting impact than a business card or flyer ever could.
